A Brief History The Stockport Liberty Belles were formed in 1976 by a small group of 8 ladies who got ‘hooked’ on four part harmony because their husbands were in a Men’s barbershop chorus so they decided to sing themselves instead of going and listening to their husbands sing. The membership has grown over the years with 52 ladies enjoying the challenge of singing ‘A Capella’ four part harmony. The chorus has a track record of being Gold, Silver and Bronze medallists throughout its history. We are affiliated to Sweet Adelines International Organisation based in Tulsa, USA. They are the largest organisation of women singers in the world with a membership of 28,000 plus committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance. In 1998 the Liberty Belles became Region 31 Gold Medal Champions. In 1999 they represented the UK in Atlanta on the International stage, competing against all the other champion choruses throughout the world. Our members’ ages range from 20+ to 70+. We are constantly striving to increase our membership. We all have one united desire to harmonise in friendship as well as song.
We are a competing chorus. Annually we meet all the other choruses in Sweet Adelines Region 31 who come from the length and breadth of the UK and Holland, to determine who the top choruses are within our region.
We also enter Music Festivals whenever possible.
We enjoy giving public performances and have a very busy calendar.
